Days 1 & 2: Denver, CO
Arrive in Denver and have a first look at the magnificent Rockies. Visit of the Colorado History Museum, which tells the colourful story of the gold miners, cowboys, sod busters, railroaders, soldiers and explorers who have called Colorado home. A block from the park is the U.S. Mint. This is the second largest storehouse of gold bullion in the U.S. and the spot where 10 billion coins are made each year.
Day 3 & 4: Rocky Mountains National Park
Today you will head to the Mountains, to Rocky Mountain National Park, one of the most scenic spots in North America, and you will travelled above timberline on Trail Ridge Road, the highest continuous highway in the nation. You will see the wildlife - elk and even a bighorn sheep, along with mountain lakes, and meadows of wildflowers .. and, of course, the spectacular mountain peaks. 2 nights Estes Park
Day 5: To Redstone, CO (234 mi / 390 km)
Stop at the Buffalo Museum & Grave in Golden, which traces the life of the West´s most famous frontier scout and showman with historic photos, paintings, mementos, posters and artifacts from the Wild West Show. In Golden, too, we found Dinosaur Ridge, where the first dinosaur skeletons were discovered. Then, a stop in Vail, known as "Ultimate Mountain Playground", before we continued to Redstone for overnight. This an enchanting alpine village and National Historic District, located along Colorado´s West Elk Scenic Byway on the edge of the Maroon Wilderness Area. 1 night redstone
Days 6, 7 & 8: To Durango, CO (199 mi / 332 km)
Today you will have a spectacular drive through mountains and passes and historic mining town en route
to Durango. Stop in Ouray, which is knicknamed the "Switzerland of America!" There are more than a dozen galleries and studios in the downtown district. Then you will hike in Box Canyon, and see the falls - a stunning canyon waterfall, with suspension bridges, picnic areas and an interpretive center.
There you will find Durango. Spend the whole day to visit Mesa Verde National Park, offering a spectacular look into the lives of the Ancestral Pueblo people who made it their home for over 700 years, from A.D. 600 to A.D. 1300. Today, the park protects over 4,000 known archeological sites, including 600 cliff dwellings. 3 nights Durango.
Days 9, 10 & 11: To Manitu Springs, CO (320 mi / 533 km)
Today you will return eastward, through Pueblo to Manitou Springs. It lies hidden between the Garden of the Gods and Pikes Peak, America´s most famous mountain. "Manitou", a Native American word for "spirit", describes this beautiful mountain community. Nine named mineral springs troughout town are fed by the snows of Pikes Peak. Long before white men travelled here, the Ute, Cheyenne and many other natives considered this area sacred. The Manitou and Pikes Peak Railway we will take you to the top of Pikes Peak, elevation 14,110. At the Cave of the Winds, you will descend into the colourful depths of Colorado. Miramont Castle and the Cliff Dwellings Museum will take you back in time its amazing! The children will love the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, Rocky Mountain Dinousaur Resource Center, and Colorado Wolf & Wildlife Center. A highlight was our visit to Royal Gorge Bridge, the highest suspension bridge in the world and an unforgettable quartermile journey through the clouds. 3 nights Manitou Springs.
